Derek is the head of strategic product development for Nuveen Asset Management, responsible for the development of retail listed investment products, institutional products, and other strategic initiatives.
Derek began working in the financial services industry in 2004 when he joined Nuveen Asset Management. Prior to his current role, he was a senior research analyst for the firm’s Municipal Fixed Income Team and led the municipal healthcare research team. As an analyst, Derek covered the hospital and long-term sectors in the high-grade, high-yield, and distressed parts of the market.
Before entering the financial services industry, Derek served as the Deputy Director for Japan Affairs in the Office of the United States Trade Representative in Washington, D.C. He also held positions as a policy analyst for the NationalEconomic Council of the White House and as Coordinator for International Relations for the Department of Commerce, Industry and Labor in Okayama, Japan.
Derek received a B.A. from Carleton College, an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, and has been a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University. He has also served on the Board of the Chicago Municipal Analysts Society.
